Roofing Gutter Care:
Many home owners may not fully appreciate the
importance of roofing gutters until the rainy season.
They route rainwater runoff from each facet of a homes
roof system to where it can drain away from the house.
Helping protect the homes foundation, basement, siding,
windows, and doors from water damage.
Problems:
Many problems can be caused or worsened by roofing gutters that do not work
properly due to improper installation or clogged gutters and downspouts. To do
their job, roofing gutters and their downspouts must remain clear of leaves and
debris.
Clogged Roofing Gutters:
Any type of roofing gutter system requires periodic inspections to ensure they are
not clogged and are operating properly. Clogged roofing gutters or downspouts
are sometimes more damaging to your home than no roofing gutters at all.
Cleaning Roofing Gutters:
1: Work gloves should be used when cleaning your roofing gutters due to they often have sharp objects or
screw points sticking out in the troughs that may not be visible when covered with debris.
2: Choose a ladder that is sturdy and place it on a firm and level base. Keep in mind that aluminum and
copper roofing gutter systems are easily dented so caution should be taken when placing ladders against
them.
3: Working from the rooftop of low pitched roofs may be easier than working from a ladder, where possible.
4: Scoop out loose debris in the gutter prior to washing with garden hose to prevent clogging of the
downspouts. This is a messy job and is best performed when the debris is slightly damp. Scooping the debris
into a plastic yard bag will minimize cleanup later.
5: wash gutters with garden hose toward the downspouts to remove remaining debris.
6: If water doesn't freely flow out the downspouts, try flushing them with the garden hose. You may also try to
free them by placing garden hose into the bottom of downspout and packing rags around the bottom to use
the water pressure to back flush. If that doesn't work, you may try a plumbers snake to pull out debris from
the bottom of the downspouts. Lastly, the downspout may need to be removed from house to be cleaned or
replaced.
Gutter Guards:
There are many types of gutter guards on the market today ranging from simple strainers placed at the
downspout openings, screens placed over the top of the entire gutter system, to designs that implement a
solid "hood" designed to keep debris out of the roofing gutter while allowing the rainwater to enter. Some of
the "hood" type gutter guards, although expensive, advertise astounding guaranties pertaining to cleaning
your roofing gutters. Care should be taken to select a contractor with an established reputation.
Conductor Heads:
The use of a conductor head creates open access at the top of the vertical downspout for cleaning with
garden hose if needed.
